Bill Collins is a native South Carolinian and a graduate of the University Of South Carolina College of Journalism. Bill has lived in Summerville since 1972 when he moved here from Atlanta to start The Summerville Journal. He wrote a weekly column, “Collins Mix”, during the decades he published the newspaper. He and his business partners renovated the old Ice House on Doty Avenue in 1981 to house the newspaper and other businesses. That was one of the first renovations undertaken in the business sector of downtown Summerville. Collins sold his newspaper and retired in 2007.
Bill has been a member of several civic clubs in Summerville and is a past President of the South Carolina Press Association. Bill has been a member of the boards of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, Flowertown Players, SPCA, and Summerville Community Orchestra. He has belonged to the Rotary Club, Exchange Club, Preservation Society, Board of Visitors of Charleston Southern University, and was a Lowcountry advisor on the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation.
Bill and his wife Margaret are active members of Summerville Presbyterian Church. They have two married children, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
